After the rebar cage is installed, the next steps are to install the tremie pipe for concreting and to clean the bottom of the hole.


Tremie Pipe Installation


Bored pile concrete is poured underwater. Since it is poured into a hole full of slurry fluid, pipes called tremie pipes, with diameters of 250mm (or 300mm) and lengths of 1m, 2m, 3m, etc., are connected and lowered all the way to the bottom of the hole. It is crucial to lower the tremie pipe straight down the center of the rebar cage, and the pipe connections must be watertight. This prevents external water or slurry from mixing into the poured concrete. The tremie pipe length is calculated so its end is about 200mm to 300mm above the bottom of the bored hole.


Slime Treatment


Due to the rebar cage installation, residual sediment from earlier cleaning, or caving of the hole walls, mud and sand can accumulate again at the bottom of the hole. Therefore, before concreting, a final cleaning of the hole bottom, called slime treatment, must be performed. This ensures the poured concrete does not mix with mud or sediment and remains free of defects. As it is an end-bearing pile, this process ensures the pile tip is free of soft mud or weak soil.


A water suction pipe and an air pipe are inserted through the tremie pipe down to the bottom of the hole. The unclean slurry and muddy mixture at the bottom are agitated with air and then expelled to the outside through the water pipe. Simultaneously, clean slurry is pumped back into the hole to maintain circulation. This is called the air-lift method. Before starting slime removal, a sounding measurement is taken. Another sounding is taken after cleaning to check the condition and confirm the thickness of the remaining sludge layer has been reduced. Concreting only begins once the remaining sludge is at an acceptable level.
