Setting Time and Compressive Strength of Cement  

Cement’s physical and chemical properties are tested in laboratories per ASTM C150 (Standard Specification for Portland Cement). Most local labs perform physical tests (setting time, compressive strength, etc.), while cement factories additionally conduct chemical property tests.  

Setting Time of Cement  

Tested via ASTM C191 (Vicat Needle method). ASTM C150 requires:  
- Initial Setting Time: ≥45 minutes for Normal Portland Cement. Marks the loss of plasticity/workability (e.g., concrete slump failure, compaction difficulty, poor finishability).  
- Final Setting Time: ≤375 minutes. Indicates complete hardening and initial strength development.  

Field Practice:  
- Before initial set: Concrete is vibrated, leveled, and screeded.  
- Between initial/final set: Surface finishing (e.g., troweling) occurs.

  
Compressive Strength of Cement

  
Tested per ASTM C109 using 2" (50mm) cement-sand mortar cubes. Requirements for Type I cement:  
- 3-day strength: ≥12 MPa (1,740 psi)  
- 7-day strength: ≥19 MPa (2,760 psi)
